The Syriac Orthodox Church

The Syriac Orthodox Church is an Oriental Orthodox church in the Syriac Antiochene tradition. This page is for Syriac Orthodox dating. It is not a page for all Syrian Christians.

Syriac Orthodox communities have longstanding roots in Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, and Turkey, with historic presence elsewhere in the region. Today, Syriac Orthodox Christians also live throughout a broad diaspora, including in the United States, Sweden, Germany, Australia, and elsewhere.

On this page, “Syriac Orthodox” refers to the church, while “Syrian” refers to a connection with Syria. The terms are historically related but are not interchangeable.

The Syriac Orthodox Church is distinct from the Syriac Catholic Church. Khuba does not decide Assyrian, Aramean, or Syriac identity questions, or how members should describe the relationship between church life, nationality, and heritage. Members describe their own cultural or ethnic identity. They also select a church family on their profile.

Khuba does not list Syriac Orthodox as a separate profile value. A Syriac Orthodox member would select Oriental Orthodox, while a Syriac Catholic member would select Catholic. Grouping Syriac Orthodox members under Oriental Orthodox does not mean Syriac Orthodox liturgy, discipline, or marriage requirements are the same as those of the Coptic Orthodox Church or the Armenian Apostolic Church. The profile records the family the member selected. It does not identify a parish, rite, or jurisdiction, and it does not confirm anyone’s practice.

Language, family, and Sunday

Classical Syriac is the traditional liturgical language of the Syriac Orthodox Church. Arabic is also widely used in worship and daily life. Some families speak modern Aramaic varieties or other languages, while diaspora churches may use English or another local language. Two people may share a Syriac Orthodox background and still need to discuss which languages they hope their children will speak, how close they live to their parents, and what fasting, feast days, and parish life look like in practice.

Family is often part of how a relationship becomes a marriage, not an afterthought. That does not mean every Syriac Orthodox family is the same, or that Khuba speaks for anyone’s relatives.

Syriac Orthodox dating across the diaspora

Members may live in Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, or other long-established Syriac Orthodox communities, or far from them. A shared Syriac Orthodox background does not remove the practical challenges of distance, visas, or deciding where a future household and parish life would be established. Khuba does not promise a match in the next city or across an ocean. It gives two people a place to see the church family someone selected and to ask the questions that matter before a relationship goes further.

Marriage and the church

Shared faith is the foundation. Churches still differ on how marriage is blessed, on previous marriages, and on what they ask of a couple before a wedding.

Khuba cannot determine someone’s ecclesiastical eligibility for marriage. Members should discuss their circumstances honestly and consult their priest, pastor, or appropriate church authority.

Khuba is not an interfaith service or a general dating app. Every member must meet the same Christian, age, relationship-status, and community eligibility requirements.
